Divorce Settlement- What is Fair?

We have all heard, or even experienced, the horror stories. Keep in mind that this is few and far between. Bad news travels much quicker! Most divorces avoid court and litigation and both parties sincerely what a fair settlement for all involved, truly.

What is fair? Each person defines “fair” differently and can be somewhat ambiguous. When one party is considerably hurt, betrayed, there is a natural tendency to want redemption. This is normal.

Consider letting go of the idea of “fair”. Stay with me for a moment here. What if each of you sat down with a financial planner to determine what you each need for yourselves to be okay? What if you focused for a minute on YOURSELF, not concerning yourself what the other is “getting”? It may not be exactly equal, but if you can find a win-win solution, would it not be worth it?

Focus on yourself. Try not to obsess over what the other party is “taking from you” or “hiding from you”. Focus on YOU and your next chapter. Set new goals, be creative and allow yourself to dream again. My goal is to support you so you may remain a family, even if it’s a two-household family.
